The NCAA football transfer portal has officially kicked into high gear.

Over 1,000 Division I FBS players have already entered the portal since it officially opened a week ago. Among those 1,000-plus players are big names such as Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, NC State quarterback Devin Leary and Virginia corner Fentrell Cypress.

But the biggest addition yet may have just come on Monday afternoon.

Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall Enters Name Into Transfer Portal

Grayson McCall burst onto the scene in the college football world as a redshirt freshman in 2020. The North Carolina native completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 2,488 yards, 26 touchdowns and three interceptions as the Chanticleers went 10-1 to win the Sun Belt Conference.

He was named the conference player of the year and was a nominee for both the Davey O’Brien and Manning awards. McCall backed that up in 2021 with another fantastic season. This time, he completed 73 percent of his passes for 2,873 yards, 27 touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Chants again went 10-1 in his starts and McCall’s 207.6 QB rating for the season set a new FBS record. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound QB explored entering the portal after the season but stayed when head coach Jamey Chadwell announced he would return to Coastal in 2022.

The duo had success again this past season. McCall battled injuries but threw for 2,633 yards, 24 touchdowns and two interceptions in 10 games played. Coastal went 9-3 and the star QB won his third consecutive Sun Belt Player of the Year award.

Chadwell has since left for Liberty where he will replace Hugh Freeze, who is now the head coach at Auburn. And it appears McCall is headed out the door with him.

McCall announced his plans to enter the portal on Monday. Though he’ll do so after playing in the Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina.

Technically, McCall has two years of eligibility remaining thanks to the waiver granted to all players for the 2020 COVID-affected season. But another strong season at a higher level of play could shoot him up draft boards.

Either way, there’s no doubt he’ll have plenty of suitors to choose from.
