The Chicago Cubs‘ home opener kicked off with the quietest “bang” in MLB history. Players were welcomed onto Wrigley Field for the first time in the 2024 campaign with a miserable pyrotechnics show in front of the dugout.

The epic fail quickly went viral on social media, leading to online mockery from opposing fans.

Chicago geared up for its first home game of the season on Monday, facing off against National League rival Colorado in the Windy City. After dropping two of three games in their season opening series, the Cubs were eager to get home and play in the friendly confines.

Anticipation was high, but those in attendance would quickly be let down as players made their ways onto the diamond.

In an attempt to hype the opening intros up, Chicago staff threw together a makeshift pyrotechnic assembly near the dugout.

We’ve seen fireworks and such be used by others during player introductions, and in most cases, they help create a raucous atmosphere ahead of the first inning of play.

In the Cubs’ case, it failed miserably, leaving those Chicago players to enter the field of play amid the most lackluster lineup drop a home opener has ever seen.

As if the mini sparklers weren’t enough, only two of the four setups appeared to be fully functioning.

Baseball followers quickly chimed in on the poor display.

“Cubs bring out the saddest pyrotechnic display for the home opener introductions.”

“New intern bought the Aldi brand setup.”

“The Bellinger deal ate into the pyrotechnics budget.”

Even the Mets trolled with a GIF of their opening intros.

Tough look for Chicago as the Cubs took an L before even getting onto the field.
