Christian Pulisic suffered a microfracture at the World Cup. His early departure from the loss to Belgium is justified.
However, his approach to the situation has been handled as poorly as possible.
The widespread criticism directed toward the United States soccer star was entirely warranted— but only up until this point of new information. Why did he allow it to get to this point?
Christian Pulisic exited the World Cup early.
What looked like a magical run for the United States Men’s National Soccer Team came crashing down in epic fashion on Monday. The Belgians defeated the Americans by a final score of 4-1. It was a disaster.
Part of the issue stemmed from an injury to Christian Pulisic. The United States had to play without their top forward for more than 30 minutes. He went down, hard, during the 52nd after a kick to the back of Youri Tielemans’ leg.
I understand why people are saying this isn’t a foul, but I’m conflicted on this.

If Tielemans’s foot is clearly in front of the ball when Pulisic strikes it, then I don’t think it’s a foul. But stepping across a player’s striking leg just before he kicks the ball should be… pic.twitter.com/CAj6jJjC1i
The 27-year-old, who has struggled with injury throughout his career, tried to play through the ailment for the next few minutes but he moved with a noticeable limp. Pulisic ultimately took himself out in the 59th minute.
His decision to exit the biggest match of his career drew harsh criticism. Especially considering that he did not play exceptionally well in the match prior to his injury.
The official injury diagnosis revealed a microfracture.
A large portion of the pushback against Christian Pulisic stemmed from the extent of his ailment. It did not seem that bad. He tried to keep running. People questioned his heart.
To make matters worse, Pulisic was fairly nonchalant about the injury after the match ended in a crushing defeat. Carli Lloyd expressed her disappointment in what he said. Landon Donovan did not hold back his thoughts.
While all of this was going on around him, Pulisic released a vacuous statement on Instagram that did not say much about anything. His post did not help the optics. It opened him up to additional criticism. Does he not care about his team?!
As it would turn out, there was a lot more to the situation than most people realized. According to The Athletic, Pulisic suffered a bone bruise and microfracture of the tibia/fibula during the loss to Belgium. He will be sidelined for several weeks. (Not months.)
If it was truly a microfracture, and not just a slight bruise, the decision to take himself out of the game was more than justified. Nobody should be expected to play through a microfracture, no matter the situation. Unfortunately, his approach to the media after the game did not do him any favors. What he said and how he acted did not match the severity of his injury.
It would’ve been very easy for Pulisic to say something like, “I gave everything I could for the team, but I ultimately could not go on because of the pain in my leg. I felt it was in the best interest of the team to get a fully-healthy player on the field. It absolutely crushed me not to be out there with my brothers.”
Instead, he talked about rest. How is he not media trained? His PR team failed him. It didn’t have to be this way.
