A baseball game between Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile was suspended due to a fight after benches cleared in the 11th inning. The two sides were unable to finish the Tuesday night contest with players coming to blows on the diamond.
What sparked the melee is still unclear. Tempers flared after an out was recorded on a foul ball in the bottom of the frame.
Spring Hill College is a four-year Jesuit Catholic college located in Alabama with an enrollment of around 1,000 students. The University of Mobile, less than 12 miles down the road, is a Baptist school of 1,700 enrollees. The rivals faced off for local bragging rights this week.

College baseball fight causes chaos in Mobile.
With the score tied at 5-5 in extra innings, a Spring Hill College batter popped up in foul territory behind home plate. The Mobile catcher made a play on the ball to successfully record the out.
As the batter made his way off the field, he squared up to Mobile’s pitcher, who’d made his way towards the baseline during the play. It appears the pitcher shouted something in the hitter’s direction, though it’s not clear if it was actually aimed at the opposing player.
Whatever the case, a confrontation followed. Punches were thrown and benches cleared.
The chaos ensued for a few moments before the sides were eventually separated. In order to avoid further incident, the game was suspended.
Spring Hill College released a brief statement on the suspension after the fact. That announcement denounced the behavior of its team’s players.

Spring Hill College entered the matchup at 28-9 on the season and riding a 12-game winning streak. Mobile (22-18), meanwhile, was looking to play spoiler.
Emotions got the best of the rivals, who’ve met on the baseball diamond nearly 160 times dating back to 1991. Mobile owns the all-time series lead at 101-51-4. An update on the game’s status should be provided at some point in the near future.
