Tennessee Soccer Player Details Grueling Treadmill Workouts To Stay In Shape During Offseason

With the 2025 regular season far in the past and the spring scrimmage season soon coming to a close, women’s college soccer players like Leah Klurman are working hard to stay in shape for the fall. That requires them to participate in a number of grueling cardio workouts during the offseason.

It is mostly on their own time but that does not mean it is easy!

The average person would not be able to complete a majority of these college soccer training programs. Even Klurman, a rising redshirt senior, has to kick it into overdrive to keep up!

Who is Leah Klurman?

So, technically speaking, this headline is misleading. Leah Klurman is no longer a member of the women’s college soccer program at the University of Tennessee.

The New Jersey-native spent the last four years on Rocky Top with the Volunteers. The 5-foot-6 defender started 18 games in 2025 as a key piece of a dominant back line that did not allow a goal through the entire non-conference schedule. Klurman also scored her first career goal against LSU.

However, she missed the entire 2023 season due to an injury and will exhaust her final season of eligibility elsewhere. Klurman signed with the University of Alabama as a graduate transfer for 2026 in December to play next season for her former program’s biggest conference rival.

But here’s the thing! Klurman is currently finishing her undergraduate degree at Tennessee. That means she is still on campus in Knoxville. She is unable to participate in the spring training program with her new team (in a different state) but no longer practices or scrimmages with her old team.

Even though Klurman is moving on, it appears as though Vols head coach Joe Kirt still allows her to use the student-athlete gym instead of forcing her out of the athletics building. That’s pretty cool.

No matter the facility, Klurman has to stay fit!

I would imagine the strength and conditioning staff at Alabama sent her the same workout schedule as the incoming freshmen class to be up to speed with her teammates upon arrival to Tuscaloosa in a few months. Maybe she freestyles her own training program. Either way, it’s brutal.

What does an offseason workout look like for women’s college soccer players?

Although the average distance will fluctuate based on position and playing style, women’s college soccer players typically run somewhere between 4-6 miles per game. Cardio is crucial to success.

With that in mind, Leah Klurman spends a lot of time on the treadmill during the offseason. This is what it looked like when she was back home for winter break:

The workouts only get harder as the semester continues. Here is a typical endurance day, with a touch of speed conditioning mixed in:

This is more of a mixed, high-intensity anaerobic day. You could call it an “engine builder.” She runs one minute at 10mph (which is above most people’s sprint speed), followed by one minute on the assault bike at 55-60rpms. Rest one minute, do it again X10.

Her incline training is also focused on endurance with a power emphasis at the end.

The most recent offseason cardio workout was, as Klurman said, “spicy.” It is the most aggressive power and speed day with a large amount of sprints.

this one was spicyyyyy🥵🥳 20 sec on/10 sec off @ 11 MPH x8 Straight into… 2 min on 10.5 Straight into… 10 cals on assault bike 2 min walk Repeat 2x Finish with 20 sec on/20 sec off @ 11 MPH 8x

Of course, Leah Klurman gets in plenty of work on the weight floor in addition to her time on the treadmill. Here is a typical leg day:

Needless to say, Klurman stays very busy during the offseason. She is working hard to get ready for her final season of college soccer at Alabama, while still at Tennessee!
