Lewis has been in Boulder since 2025, signing as a four-star recruit and top high school prospect. He backed up Kaidon Salter as a freshman before grabbing the keys to the offense in his sophomore season.
Unfortunately, he’s been unable to meet expectations. He’s 2-2 under center. He was benched during a game against Baylor and has not seen the field since.
Many have been critical of his absence. There are reports that his camp refuses to let him play in a reserve role. Head coach Deion Sanders fueled that narrative with an update on the signal caller’s future.
“That on him,” he replied when asked about Lewis’s chances of winning back the starting role. “I don’t play games with young men and their careers and hate on folks. If anything, I’m too forgiving.”
The school released a statement about the quarterback on Thursday.
Colorado Athletics extends our full support to JuJu and his family through this medical emergency. He remains in the thoughts of every CU player, coach, and staff member and we will continue to assist in any way we can in his full recovery. His health and well-being remain our top priority during this time.
Lewis was listed as doubtful on the most recent injury report. It’s not clear if that report was released before or after the medical scare.
Joseph Williams was quick to respond to the situation online. He posted both a showing of support and a message to fans.

There are some that believe Lewis has lost the support of teammates given his body language in recent matchups. Transfer rumors have been swirling.
With that said, he still has someone on the Colorado football team in his corner.
Williams has played two seasons in Boulder after a transfer from Tulsa. He’s recorded 83 catches with the Buffs for 1,132 yards and nine scores.
Soon after posting his message of support, he gave advice to the fanbase. It came in the form of a cryptic tweet on the importance of mental health.
Y’all are so quick to judge us but don’t know what we may go through, athletes mental health matters also!!! God bless everyone 🫶🏽
