Connor McDavid Nets Goal Of The Year Candidate After Making Trevor Zegras Look Foolish

To say the 2010s were not a great time to be a fan of the Edmonton Oilers would be one hell of an understatement. The franchise was so bad at the start of the decade that it earned the top overall pick in the NHL Draft three years in a row (which forced the league to update its rulebook), but it still fail to capitalize after adding Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and (noted bust) Nail Yakupov to the roster.

However, the tides began to turn when Edmonton once against secured the first pick in the 2015 draft and earned the right to scoop up Connor McDavid, who has played an instrumental role in helping the Oilers finally turn things around.

McDavid was surrounded by Connor Bedard levels of hype when he entered the league, and it’s safe to say he’s more than lived up to those expectations. The center’s unmatched speed, stellar puck handling, and devastating finishing ability have made him a nightmare for opposing teams, and he routinely pulls off the kinds of feats that make you think “Did this dude just did this?”

McDavid has already been responsible for a number of pretty goals this season, but he truly outdid himself when the Oilers faced off against the Ducks on Wednesday night.

Trevor Zegras has also cemented himself as one of the most electric players in the league since making his debut with Anaheim in 2021. He’s one of just a handful of guys who can say they’ve pulled off “The Michigan” in an NHL game, and the assist he secured with an over-the-goal “alley-oop” pass last season will be remembered as one of the coolest plays in the history of hockey.

Zegras undoubtedly has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Unfortunately, he found himself overshadowed by McDavid on Wednesday courtesy of what unfolded midway through the first period of the tilt, as the Oilers phenom made the up-and-coming star look like a beer league player during a sequence where he pulled off a disgusting spin move before depositing a backhand into the net to give Edmonton a 3-1 lead.

You almost have to feel bad for fellow Oiler Leon Draisaitl, who also pulled off an absurd between-the-legs deflection on the power play to score Edmonton’s final goal in the 6-2 victory.

What a game.
