Defending Doug Gottlieb is not something I imagined I would be doing when I woke up this morning. The Green Bay Phoenix head coach recently made a fair point that should not be ignored when discussing his bizarre Twitter feud with Adam Schefter.
The feud began when Schefter reported that Michael Vick was in contention to become the head football coach at Sacramento State, which Schefter reported has a $50 million NIL budget. Of course, the reality of the situation is far different, which several college football media members made sure to clarify. As did Gottlieb, who called out Schefter for parroting what he believes an agent told him.
That led to Schefter hitting back at Gottlieb over his putrid 2-11 record since becoming the head coach at Green Bay. That part was pretty fun, and pretty fair considering Gottlieb’s apparent view of his coaching position. After another recent loss, Gottlieb addressed the exchange with Schefter. And he actually made a decent point while doing so.
Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) was asked postgame today about the @AdamSchefter back-and-forth on this app & his dedication to the head coaching job at UW-Green Bay as he continues to do radio.

Doug Gottlieb Explains Why He Fired Back At Adam Schefter With Valid Point
“Part of the energy towards Schefty was this – when people put out that a program has $50 million in NIL, it makes programs at this level, which is the same level basketball wise, look like ‘What are we doing,'” he said. “‘Cause we’re nowhere near that and so are they,” Gottlieb said about Schefter’s report.”
Gottlieb noted that when Schefter reports that a program like Sacramento State has $50M (which it does not having), it can be paralyzing for donors to smaller programs. Those donors begin to feel like their efforts are all for naught. It’s a valid argument and very important one at a time where smaller college athletics programs face a very real existential threat.
Do I like agreeing with Doug Gottlieb? It’s not my favorite thing in the world! But in this situation, Gottlieb makes a very fair point about the importance of accurate reporting, and we can’t blame him for saying it.
