Ed Reed is one of the greatest NFL players of all time. The safety was a five-time first-team All-pro selection and made the Hall of Fame on his first ballot.

His ball-hawking skills on the back end of some excellent Baltimore Ravens’ defenses in the 2000s were the stuff of legend. It was even enough for him to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004.

He was a cultural icon at the time, too. Kids playing football in the backyard or at recess all wanted to be Ed Reed. The Miami product, who was a star for the legendary 2001 Miami Hurricanes, made playing safety cool. He and Ray Lewis were arguably the two most recognizable players on defense of the entire decade.

And, with Deion Sanders taking the route of becoming an HBCU head coach at Jackson State before parlaying it into the head job at Colorado, others will be looking to make the same jump.

Ed Reed is one of them, as he has decided to follow in Deion’s footsteps.

Ed Reed will be the next head coach at Bethune-Cookman

Bethune-Cookman is one of the most legendary Historically Black College or University football programs in the country. The university, based in Daytona Beach, has won 14 conference titles. They now play in the SWAC, the same league as Jackson State, after leaving the MEAC in 2021.

And, on Tuesday, Ed Reed agreed to be their next football coach.

The program has fallen on hard times, as they have gone a combined 4-18 over the past two years. But, Reed will provide a huge boost.

Ed Reed already has college coaching experience. He served as a senior advisor to Mario Cristobal at Miami this fall, and has been with that program for three years.

It will be interesting to see if this turns into another Deion Sanders situation and if he can turn it around for Bethune-Cookman
