Ethan Holliday could soon follow in the footsteps of his big brother, Jackson Holliday, as the first overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. There are three guys in the mix for the No. 1 pick and the youngest son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday is one.
However, his level of competition and a need for young pitching could cause him to slide out of the top spot.
Holliday, who turned 18 years old at the end of February, is right in the middle of his senior season of high school baseball at Stillwater High School in Oklahoma. The Pioneers are 13-3. Their star shortstop is currently hitting north of .620 with eight home runs.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder (and growing) throws righty and bats lefty. His frame more closely resembles that of his father than his older brother so he likely projects as a third baseman on the next level.
In the meantime, all Ethan Holliday does is mash. He (No. 7) recently hit a monster home run against Norman that will make the Nationals, Angels and Mariners salivate over his potential. Just wait for it:
As things currently stand, the younger Holliday is committed to play college baseball at Oklahoma State. Head coach Josh Holliday is his uncle.
There is a very small chance that he will ever make it to campus. Washington, Los Angeles or Seattle will probably draft him with one of the first three MLB Draft picks. At the very worst, he slides to Colorado at No. 4 or St. Louis at No. 5. Barring unforeseen catastrophe, Holliday is not dropping out of the top-five.
The only potential concern with Ethan Holliday might be the level of competition he has faced over the last year. His older brother played in all of the high-profile circuits and participated in all of the showcases. He skipped out on a lot of those same camps and workouts.
With that being said, Holliday played for Team USA instead. He put together a really solid sample in terms of at-bats on which to evaluate despite mediocre performance. 6A high school baseball in Oklahoma could also be a lot worse.
Jackson Holliday has long said that his little brother is even better than he. Ethan Holliday will have a chance to prove him true in just a few months.
