For 13 seasons, the basketball world watched Giannis Antetokounmpo develop into one of the best players the NBA has ever seen with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Now, that relationship is over. After significant speculation in the 2025 offseason and then a tumultuous 2025-26 season under Doc Rivers, the Bucks ripped off the band-aid and traded Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat last month in a deal involving several players and picks in return.

The Heat were seen as one of the few teams in the league that Antetokounmpo would have actually accepted a trade to. Now, however, it sounds like he’s having significant second thoughts.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Doesn’t Sound Sure About Leaving Milwaukee For The Heat

Antetokounmpo recently sat down for an interview with longtime Bucks announcer Jim Paschke that covered several topics from throughout his time in Milwaukee.

While he talked about his time with the Bucks teaching him how to grow up and what life was like in the United States, he also talked about his future with the Heat and what he thought about it.

“I’m scared. I’m scared of change; I’m scared that the grass is not always greener. … People love me here,” he told Paschke. “People respect me here; people allow me to be myself here in the city. And I’m scared that I might never find that ever again.”

Those are all very reasonable fears. But perhaps they are also fears he should have considered when leaving. And they’re certainly not fears that will sit well with Miami Heat fans.

Antetokounmpo certainly isn’t the first star athlete to feel this way about a new team. And his vulnerability is part of what has made him into a fan favorite.

However, the Miami Heat are now paying him a lot of money to be the face of their franchise. We’d bet they probably don’t want the face of their franchise saying he’s scared of joining their team.
