Qualifying for a major golf tournament is stressful enough but being confronted by an angry driver who just had their windshield smashed by an errant tee shot and drove their vehicle onto the course and down the fairway before demanding answers adds a whole new element to the pressure. That is exactly what happened to Mark Knecht who was playing in the U.S. Senior Open qualifier at Miami Valley Country Club in Dayton, Ohio last weekend.
Now I have said this before and I’m sure I will say it again at some point, but Ryan French at MondayQ is one of the best storytellers in the industry. He share this story of Mark Knecht’s wild U.S. Senior Open qualification journey that started with an errant tee shot leading to him being confronted by a driver *on the course* before he went on to hit a hole-in-one on the very next tee. Wild stuff!
Golfer In U.S. Senior Open Qualifier Smashes Car’s Windshield With Tee Shot, Gets Confronted, Then Hits Hole-In-One
According to Ryan French from MondayQ, golfer Mark Knecht is an accomplished Kentucky amateur golfer. According to the GHIN database, Knecht is a +2.3 handicap and shot under par three times in the month of May. Not too shabby… He previously won the Kentucky Senior Open back in 2020 to complete the Kentucky Slam that year:
Knecht was on the 12th hole of the Miami Valley Country Club in Dayton, Ohio during the U.S. Senior Open qualifier looking for his ball. He had hit a horrible shot on his first attempt, hit a provisional, and walked off into the fairway.
As he is in the fairway using his 3 minutes of allotted time to look for his first ball he sees a red pickup truck driving down the fairway toward him with a smashed windshield. At that point it became abundantly clear where his first tee shot had went: it soared out of bounds and smashed the windshield.
According to Ryan French’s account, the driver stopped about “10 to 15 yards” in front of the golfers and didn’t ride right into the group. But at that point their hearts must’ve still been racing.
The driver was noticeably angry but not confrontational. They wanted answers about who was going to pay for the smashed windshield.
Unclear of the driver’s intentions, the group did not reveal who had hit the shot. They protected Knecht’s identity out of fear the driver would retaliate. Eventually, the truck driver headed back up the fairway and off to the clubhouse to demand answers and payment which he would ultimately receive in the end.
Triple Bogey… Not great!
So at this point, after losing the first tee shot to the windshield and hitting a provisional, Mark Knecht is staring down a triple bogey ‘7’ on the 12th hole and his dream of qualifying for Senior U.S. Open feels all but dead. His heart is racing from the confrontation with the driver. So what does he do next?
He steps up to the tee box on the 143-yard par-3 13th hole and hits a shot that “never left the flag” as Knecht told MondayQ. A hole-in-one.
The ball took one hop and landed in the cup. And he played the 2-hole stretch at 1-over despite the triple bogey on 12 and being confronted by the driver in the red pickup truck.
According to MondayQ, Knecht’s scorecard had a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 on it thanks to the ace on 13th and the triple bogey 7 on the 12th hole. What are the odds of that?!
When it was all said and done he got back to the clubhouse and has to cough up the $ for the smashed windshield.
