Paintsville defeated Martin County during the high school football game in Kentucky on Friday night. Tthe losing team did not keep its composure in defeat, which led to a bench-clearing brawl during the second half.
It was an ugly scene.
Fortunately, the high school football coaches were able to step in and deescalate the situation before anyone got hurt. Unfortunately, both incidents appeared to involve the same player.
Martin County lost to Paintsville.
Martin County High School is located in the small town of Inez, Kentucky. It enrolls less than 550 students in Grades 9-12. Paintsville High School is even smaller! It enrolls less than 400 students in Grades 7-12 with approximately 200 students in Grades 9-12.
The Cardinals compete in Class 1A of the KHSAA. The Tigers compete in Class 2A.
These two schools are located on the easternmost border of the Bluegrass state. They played each other in high school football on Friday. Paintsville traveled to Martin County. The game had big implications on the playoffs and seeding.
It was a blowout. The Tigers secured their ninth win of the season by a final score of 40-6. The Cardinals dropped to 4-6.
However, the biggest story from the night had nothing to do with the on-field results. A pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties will be the lasting image.
A bench-clearing brawl spoiled the Kentucky high school football game.
Two separate videos show a disturbing behavioral trend for Martin County. According to parents of Paintsville, both dirty plays involved the same player but I have not been able to confirm whether or not that is true and the video is too grainy to be certain.
Either way, it was unacceptable.
The first incident occurred on a huge run down the sideline. A Tigers player lingered near the 40-yard-line while his teammate scampered toward the end zone. A Cardinals player sought him out and laid him out. He drew a penalty, and rightfully so.

The second incident was much worse. A Martin County player ran up behind a Paintsville player, picked him up from the back, and threw him to the ground with a WWE-style takedown. Benches cleared. Punches were thrown.

If it was the same player who committed both unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, he should face the consequences of his actions. At the bare minimum, he should not be allowed to play in the next game. I would not be surprised if he is suspended indefinitely.
