The Indianapolis Colts Hit Record-Setting Levels Of Tanking With Their Incredible Collapse Against The Minnesota Vikings

That the Indianapolis Colts are a bad football team isn’t exactly news to anybody. Just how bad a football team, however, nobody could have imagined.

The Colts came out of the gates on fire Saturday against the 10-3 Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium. Indianapolis was good, coupled with an absolutely pathetic performance from the Vikings, that it took a 33-0 lead into the halftime break.

But little did we know that all Minnesota needed was a little halftime inspiration to pull itself out of the mud.

Slowly but surely, the Vikings chipped away. They got on the board midway through the third quarter when Kirk Cousins hit K.J. Osbourne for a 2-yard touchdown. Following a Colts field goal, C.J. Ham cut the lead to 36-14 with a 1-yard touchdown run.

A Justin Jefferson touchdown catch made it 36-21 with 12:53 left on the clock, and when Adam Theilen hauled in a 1-yard touchdown with 5:30 remaining, you could feel something special happening.

After yet another defensive stop, Dalvin Cook took a screen pass 64 yards for a touchdown with 2:15 left to play. A Cousins to T.J. Hockenson 2-point conversion just a second later put the Vikings, and the Colts, on the precipice of history.

The two teams then went to overtime and, after a pair of empty possessions to star, Vikings kicker Greg Joseph drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired to complete the largest comeback in NFL history.

The previous record belonged to the Frank Reich-led Buffalo Bills who came from 32 points down to beat the Houston Oilers in an AFC Wild Card game. Reich, of course, coached the Colts before being fired earlier this season.

The Colts’ collapse, meanwhile, has fans asking questions.

The Colts are now 4-9-1. Even before the loss to the Vikings, they were going nowhere fans, and many fans assumed the shocking move to hire coach Jeff Saturday was an attempt to tank for a high draft pick.

Now it appears fans are even more sure of that theory.
