Ever wonder what it feels like to be a Formula 1 driver behind the wheel of the world’s most technologically advanced race cars?

Well, we can’t exactly give you that feeling. The G-forces alone would probably cause you to either pass out or suffer from severe neck soreness for several days.

But what we can do, thanks to the incredible folks over at Formula 1 and Sky Sports in England, is give you the next best thing.

Formula 1 revealed a brand new camera angle during Friday’s free practice 1 ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.

“The new gimbal onboard camera, positioned on the side of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes W14, shows an incredible view of what the seven-time world champion sees when he is out on track,” the series says of the video. It gives the viewer an amazing idea of the speed and slope of the track, as well as how quickly the corners come at the drivers.

The new camera is embedded in a piece of bodywork just off to the side behind the driver’s head. Additionally, it’s connected using a gimbal so that viewers can get a sense of the various elevation changes and turns and tilts throughout a lap.

Which comes at a fantastic time, as the legendary Suzuka circuit is often compared to riding a rolling coaster.

Formula 1 cars have a top speed of around 210 miles per hours and, perhaps more impressively, can corner at over 200 miles per hour while still maintaining grip.

The new camera gives fans the closest experience yet of what that feels like.

“Ayo where this camera angle been? So much better. You actually get a sense of speed,” one fan on Twitter said.

More of camera angles like these please. It helps to add to the sense of speed which is massively lacking otherwise with modern F1,” said another.

Hopefully this is just a taste of what’s to come when it comes to creative new camera angles in the world of motorsport.
