Freshman wide receiver Jacory Barney caught a painful welcome to winter in Nebraska during the football team’s move-in day. A native of Miami, FL, he’s certainly not used to seeing snow!

That’s not the case in Lincoln, where temperatures dipped to single digits this week. Barney wasn’t ready!

The team got back to campus this weekend as players gear up for the spring semester. Barney, who signed this past December, opted to enroll early and get a head start on his Cornhusker career.

Rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals and a Top 25 wide receiver by 24/7 Sports, Barney is hoping to make an impact early.

“A quick-twitch athlete that just makes plays,” his recruiting bio reads. “Understands how to create separation while getting vertical with his speed and has a surprisingly high success-rate in contested catch situations. Slippery in the open field and has a knack for making defenders miss.”

Barney has a chance to see the field in the coming season, whether that be on offense or special teams. Still, the move to the next level and his new surroundings could be an adjustment – weather included!

Alongside other midyear enrollees, Barney attempted to make himself at home while battling blustery winter conditions.

The scene in Lincoln differed significantly from that of sunny Miami, which is sitting comfortably in the mid-70s this week. The wideout landed a direct hit while attempting to navigate an icy campus.

Losing his snack and beverage, Barney got put on skates as he smacked the concrete while walking to the bus.

Teammates had a laugh at the warm weather native, reveling in his pain. That will take some getting used to!

Nebraska football does charity work on MLK Day

It wasn’t all bad in Lincoln this weekend.

Doing its part to give back over the holiday, the team shoveled snow, stopped into a local food bank, and did some light painting.

A great way to bond with new teammates.

Those relationships will be crucial as the ‘Huskers look to build upon a 5-7 season in Year 1 of the Matt Rhule era. That was an up-and-down campaign that saw Nebraska lose its first two football games before ripping off four wins in five contests.

After getting to 5-3, though, NU was unable to gain bowl eligibility, dropping each of its final four matchups.

Rhule and Co. will do their best to right the ship in 2024, starting with a season opening meeting against UTEP.
