Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave a commencement speech at the private Kansas-based university Benedictine College that has made waves in the sports world due to its content, particularly Butker’s beliefs about women.

During his speech, Butker directly addressed the women in the crowd and spoke about the “diabolical lie” they’ve been told about pursuing their own careers and passions, and should instead focus on the “most important title of all: homemaker.”

“”I want to speak directly to you [women] briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you,” Butker said.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world… embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

Naturally, given that this is the year 2024 and not 1954, Butker’s comments were resoundingly rejected by many women in sports media, such as NFL Network’s Jamie Erdahl.

“The Chiefs kicker is lucky @gmfb is on hiatus. I would be asking for a few minutes tomorrow to let off some steam 😤,” Erdahl tweeted on May 14. “And then I would return home to my rightful place with my children and husband. 🫠”

Butker’s retrograde beliefs about the role of women in society isn’t the only part of his speech that sparked outrage and confusion, as the fact that Butker — a kicker who went to private school and is making $5 million pr year — told the grads in the crowd to “do hard things” was also widely mocked.

Butker, who hasn’t tweeted since October 2023 and hasn’t posted on Instagram since early April, has yet to publicly address his controversial comments now that they’ve gone viral.
