Jannik Sinner had so much blood seep through his white sneaker that he risked a dress code violation at Wimbledon. Not actually, but it was a pretty gnarly situation by the end of his first round match on Centre Court.

Fortunately, he said after the win that he is all good!

The injury scare nearly sent shockwaves across the historic tennis tournament. The reigning champion at the Championships took a nasty fall during the third set that almost ended his bid for back-to-back titles before it got started.

Jannik Sinner’s suffered an injury scare.

Sinner, the No. 1 seed, kicked things off on Monday against 26-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. It took much longer than expected at a full time of three hours and 29 minutes.

The unseeded Serbian actually took the first set against the Italian but Jannik Sinner bounced back to win the second. The third set was an instant classic. It went to Kecmanovic during a 14-point tiebreak.

However, the biggest storyline was an awkward fall. Sinner slipped, went into the splits and fell backward with his legs at an uncomfortable position.

It took him a moment to get back to his feet. Sinner was gimpy. He grabbed at his hip. The crowd at Centre Court held its breath.

Fortunately, the 24-year-old was able to continue. He rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets to advance to the next round despite an uncharacteristic 51 unforced errors in five sets. And it sounds like he is going to be okay.

Not only did Jannik Sinner slip and fall (twice), his shoe started to turn red during the end of the third set. ESPN announcers assumed that it was blood but at first could not confirm.

It became increasingly clear that Sinner was bleeding through his sock onto his white shoe as the match continued.

The Wimbledon Golf Club famously adheres to a strict dress code. Athletes can only wear white. A single trim of color is allowed around the neckline, cuff of sleeves, and down the outside seam of shorts or skirts, but it must be no wider than one centimeter. Shoes must also be be almost entirely white, including the laces and soles.

Sinner’s bloody shoe was in violation of the dress code! Even the on-court announcer made a crack during his post-match interview.

“You gave us all a small heart attack when you had that nasty fall. I’m looking at your right foot. Your white shoe is so red. It’s not quite in contravene of the Wimbledon white guidelines. I’m guessing it’s blood. You must be in pain.”

Sinner played into the joke. Fortunately, it was just an issue with his nail. He didn’t want to stop the match for treatment out of respect to his opponent. He chose to play through the blood.

“No no. I’m good. It just seems much worse than it is. I’m actually very surprised they let me keep playing because… all white, it turned into a little red. It’s just a nail. I didn’t want to disturb Miomir. I think we both had a good rhythm. It was a great match from both of us. I didn’t want to take any time. It’s all good. Thank you.”

That settles that! Jannik Sinner is okay. No cause for concern. He will get a new pair of white shoes, sans blood, for the second round.
