Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is currently at the center of an NBA investigation concerning a gambling scandal with the potential to bring his career to an end, and he was apparently no stranger to sports betting based on a report outlining his behavior in the years leading up to that development.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to suggest most NBA fans primarily know Jontay Porter as the brother of Denver Nuggets big man Michael Porter Jr. The former is anything but a household name, as he had a brief stint with the Grizzlies after going undrafted out of college and spent a couple of years in the G League before inking a two-way contract with the Raptors in 2023.

Porter appeared in 26 games for Toronto this season while averaging an unremarkable 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. While he wasn’t really used to making headlines, that changed at the end of March when the NBA announced it was examining a string of early exits from games linked to suspicious prop betting activity.

Things took another turn when we learned Porter operated a private Discord server where users who paid $49.99 a month had access to his tips concerning stocks and crypto, which has sparked admittedly unfounded speculation he was also using the platform to distribute inside information concerning his own games via DMs.

Now, some new information has come to light courtesy of Action Network, which spoke with multiple sources who say Porter “wagered millions of dollars” using a FanDuel VIP account registered in Colorado between 2021 and 2023 (which he reportedly stopped using shortly before signing with the Raptors).

While he supposedly placed more than 1,000 wagers during that span, the people familiar with the matter say he didn’t bet on NBA or college basketball games (he did brag about hitting a parlay during March Madness in 2022, but there’s no rule preventing NBA players from wagering on NCAA contests).

As a result, this doesn’t really seem like a smoking gun, but Porter’s future still remains up in the air as he faces a potential lifetime ban if the NBA determines he was giving tips to bettors.
