The Las Vegas Raiders are potentially facing a holdout situation with their star running back, Josh Jacobs, if they fail to reach a long-term contract agreement, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

In an interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Pelissero stated that if a long-term deal is not reached, he doesn’t anticipate Jacobs being present at the start of training camp or even showing up for Week 1 of the regular season.

Pelissero: “One [situation] that nobody’s talking about is Josh Jacobs, at this point, if there’s not a long-term deal I don’t anticipate Jacobs being there at the start of training camp and I don’t know that he shows up Week 1.”

Jacobs, along with Tony Pollard of the Dallas Cowboys and Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants, received the franchise tag this offseason. While Pollard has already signed his tag, both Barkley and Jacobs haven’t.

While negotiations between the Giants and Barkley have been widely discussed, but information regarding talks between the Raiders and Jacobs has been relatively scarce.

This recent report suggests that the lack of updates does not necessarily indicate a less tense situation.

The Raiders have until July 17 to negotiate a long-term extension with Jacobs; otherwise, he will have to play the 2023 season under the franchise tag. However, because Jacobs has not yet signed the tag, he is not officially under contract and is therefore not subject to fines for missing voluntary OTAs and minicamp.

Jacobs could choose to holdout during training camp without facing penalties. Jacobs would only begin to lose money if he were to miss regular-season games.

For each game he sits out, he would forfeit 1/17th of the $10.1 million tender that comes with the franchise tag.
