As wildfires continue to rip through the Los Angeles area, obviously the first and foremost concern is the health and well-being of those who lives in the other. Unfortunately, the fires have also caused major inconveniences to many of those who live and work in the area.
The latest victim of that is the PGA Tour Genesis Inivitational. The Genesis Invitational, originally know as the Los Angeles Open, has been a mainstay on the tour for nearly 100 years and is the premier event on the annual West Coast swing. Beginning in 2020 after the demise of earlier tournament, The National, Tiger Woods and his foundation took over hosting duties for the event.
PGA Tour Makes Call To Move Genesis Invitational Amid Ongoing Fires
Sadly, this year’s event has been moved out of Los Angeles and iconic Riviera Country Club according to David Rumsey of Front Office Sports. Riviera, which is set to host golf at the Summer Olympics in 2028, has hosted the Genesis 60 times, including every year since 1999.
“Out of respect for the unfolding situation, we have determined that the 2025 Genesis Invitational will be played at an alternate location the week of February 10–16,” the PGA Tour said in a statement. Although the PGA Tour did not state where the event would now be held or if will remain an “elevated event.”
Earlier this week, Woods, a California native, weighed in on the toll that the fires are taking on the community.
“It’s just sad,” he said after his debut match in TGL. “To see what has happened, I’ve known a couple people that have lost everything, so it’s just hard.”
Woods did not have an update on the Genesis at the time.
The Lakers, Clippers and Los Angeles Kings each had their schedules altered due to the fires. While the NFL moved last week’s playoff game between the Rams and Vikings from LA to Arizona.
