Lane Kiffin appeared on The Pivot podcast this week to talk about coaching, life, and college football. He threw an unexpected jab at a former SEC quarterback in the process.

Kiffin shaded Miami football for overspending on Carson Beck. He doesn’t believe it’s money well spent!

Beck played five seasons with Georgia, taking over for national title winner Stetson Bennett in 2023. In his two years as starter, the Bulldogs won 24 games and made one College Football Playoff field. Despite the success, he opted to leave Athens this offseason.

Before the start of his senior year, Beck was expected to be a top NFL Draft pick. Injury concerns and inconsistent play resulted in his stock tanking. The QB threw an SEC-leading 12 interceptions a year ago. He also saw dips in completion percentage and yards per game.

After going down with an arm injury in the SEC Championship Game, he was replaced by Gunner Stockton. Stockton’s play was largely praised by the UGA fanbase. Carson Beck believed it was time to move on.

After a brief flirtation with the NFL Draft, Beck entered the transfer portal. He landed at Miami with then-girlfriend Hanna Cavinder.

Miami paid Carson Beck $4 million to transfer.

The Hurricanes needed a replacement for future No. 1 pick Cam Ward. Despite his recent injury and a dip in production, Miami targeted Beck.

It was reported that he’d have a $4 million salary for his final season in college. Lane Kiffin believes that number is far too high.

“Did they see him play against us last year?” he asked Ryan Clark and The Pivot crew. Shots fired!

Kiffin couldn’t help himself. He also couldn’t fathom a team spending that much on a player like Carson Beck.

Ole Miss bottled up Beck in Oxford last season. The Bulldogs mustered just 10 points. Beck was held to 186 yards passing to go along with an interception.

A number of Georgia fans quickly pointed out that Beck threw for 306 yards in a 52-17 blowout the year before. Lane Kiffin has likely pushed that game to the furthest corner of his mind.

Still, concerns surrounding the passer remain. His massive $4 million bag will cause his play to be scrutinized even more. Kiffin doesn’t anticipate Miami getting a return on their investment.
