On the day of the college lacrosse national championship, the biggest storyline in the sport still has to do with Lars Tiffany and the Virginia Cavaliers. He is seeking compensation for a three-year contract extension that ultimately proved irrelevant when the school chose to go in a different direction.
This could get messy…
UVA could end up having to pay two college lacrosse coaches at the same time. The university is choosing not to comment while this unexpected dispute gets sorted out.
Virginia fired its college lacrosse coach, kind of.
The University of Virginia hired Lars Tiffany in 2017. The three-time Ivy League champion head coach immediately returned the program to national relevance.
UVA finished No. 1 in the ACC and No. 3 in the nation in goals per games, assists per game and points per game during his first season. The Hoos won the ACC Championship and the National Championship just two years later in 2019. They won a second national title in 2021 after the pandemic canceled the entire season in 2020. Tiffany technically won “back-to-back” national titles.
The Cavaliers returned to the Final Four in 2023 and 2024 but completely missed out on the postseason all together at 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the ACC that next season. Oh well. It was a flukey year. No big deal!
Virginia entered the 2026 with much higher expectations than 2025, obviously. Tiffany’s team started slow during his 10th season at the helm with four losses in its first seven games, including an upset loss at home to Towson. The Hoos ultimately got hot at the right time and played their way into the NCAA Tournament with wins over No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 5 North Carolina in the ACC Championship.
However, they lost to Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Rumors started to swirl about Tiffany’s future with the program not too long thereafter. He was adamant that he was not going anywhere. He even held individual meetings with all of the returning players for next season.
And then Virginia announced its decision not to bring him back as head coach for 2027 on May 18. There are a lot of theories as to why he was let go— rather, not invited back. We don’t know the full truth.
Lars Tiffany is seeking financial compensation.
This is where things take an unexpected turn.
According to Terry Foy of Inside Lacrosse, Lars Tiffany is seeking compensation for a three-year contract extension that never actually came to fruition. Or did it?
Virginia reportedly offered Tiffany a new deal in July of 2025. It doubled back with a second offer in December after a back-and-forth discussion about compensation and terms of duration. Conversations between the two parties came to a halt over the winter. The contract extension sat in the ether.
As the story goes, Tiffany decided to sign the agreement on March 24, 2026 when the Cavaliers were 5-4. He was ultimately ousted in May. Virginia said it was going in another direction. It did not “fire” him.
Tiffany claims otherwise. His representatives reportedly sent a letter to the university earlier this week. He (through them) is seeking compensation owed to him through 2029 from the three-year extension.
Virginia cited a policy that prevents the university from discussing personal negotiations. It will not comment on whether or not Lars Tiffany received a contract extension offer or if it was signed.
