The umpires in Wednesday’s New York Mets vs. Minnesota Twins game made a glaring-error that wound up costing the Mets a run in a game that wound up being decided by just one run. The Mets lost the game by a score of 4-3 in extra inning.
With two outs remaining in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game, Twins shortstop Willi Castro drove in a run with a ground ball to first base despite being thrown out. The call was blown by first base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, as New York Mets relief pitcher José Buttó undeniably reached first base before Castro.
The run gave the Twins a 3-0 lead, with the game eventually ending with a score of 4-3, ultimately making it the deciding run.
As they’ve been known to do in the past, famed eye-surgery brand LASIK chimed in to offer MLB umpires free surgery — this is a gag they’ve done in the past, recently offering free surgery to NFL refs following a perceived blown-call in the AFC championship game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.
That’s such a bad call by the umpire and the Mets can’t challenge because of the awful rules in place. Costs the Mets a run because of terrible umpiring.

“Reminder: Umpires can be better but so can we all. Never personally attack, message, or harass referees or umpires. They’re human, just like us, and mistakes happen. Let’s keep the conversation focused on improving the game and celebrating fairness, not tearing individuals down. Better vision, better calls—and better sportsmanship,” the company added in a follow-up tweet.
With the loss to the Twins on Wednesday, the Mets ultimately dropped the series to Minnesota, losing two out of three games. The Mets won’t have any time to mull the loss, however, as they head to Citi Field to begin a homestand series against the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.
Mets fans will certainly be hoping to see more from Juan Soto this weekend, as the All-Star went 0-for-5 in the rubber match against the Twins on Wednesday.
