At this point, there’s not much LeBron James hasn’t managed to achieve. However, he’s added a new entry to his résumé after making history by becoming the first pro athlete to get the Ken doll treatment—although Mattel missed out on a golden opportunity to incorporate one of the most entertaining memes the NBA legend has spawned.
There’s no telling when LeBron James is going to bring his career to an end, as the 40-year-old who is in the midst of his 22nd season will all but certainly set the record for the longest-tenured player in NBA history when he presumably suits up for the Lakers next season.
The future first-ballot Hall of Famer continues to pad his lead after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most career points, currently has four championships and the same number of NBA Finals and regular season MVP awards, and will eventually hang up his sneakers after setting a number of records that will likely never be beaten.
As I alluded to above, it would probably be easier to mention the things LeBron hasn’t managed to do, and on Wednesday, we learned he’s managed to check yet another box by becoming the first pro athlete to be turned into a Ken doll courtesy of the folks at Mattel.
According to The Athletic, James was tapped to become the inaugural “Kenbassador” (the first in a line of currently unrevealed celebrities who will get a similar treatment to mark the 65th anniversary of the doll Ryan Gosling memorably portrayed in the Barbie movie) as part of a collaboration with his Family Foundation.
The figure is one inch taller than a standard Ken doll as a nod to LeBron’s stature and features a pregame outfit that boasts a number of on-brand accessories including a variety jacket with a nod to his Ohio background, Nike Terminator High sneakers, a pair of Beats headphones, a gold watch, and an “I Promise” wristband.
Mattel has also pledged to donate a copy of his book I Am More Than to Save the Children for each of the first 5,000 dolls that are sold, and they somehow failed to include a miniature copy opened up to the first page to really firm up LeBron’s pregame aesthetic.
The doll will retail for $75 when it goes on sale at retailers including Walmart, Target, and Amazon on April 14th.
