Luis Ortiz is currently under investigation by Major League Baseball for a potential violation of the gambling policy. A new video from the beginning of June makes him look very guilty.
It appears as though the 26-year-old starting pitcher was upset with a strikeout.
Ortiz is currently 16 starts into his fourth year on the MLB level. This is his first campaign with the Cleveland Guardians after a stellar breakout season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, his numbers are not what they were in 2024. They dropped pretty significantly in every single category.
- ERA
- 2024 — 3.32
- 2025 — 4.36
- Innings pitched (in the same number of starts)
- 2024 — 135.2
- 2025 — 88.2
- Walks (in less innings pitched)
- 2024 — 42
- 2025 — 42
- Strikeouts
- 2024 – 107
- 2025 — 96
Perhaps Luis Ortiz turned back into a pumpkin. Perhaps he is struggling on purpose.
Is Luis Ortiz actively trying to pitch poorly?
Major League Baseball placed Ortiz on “non-disciplinary paid leave” through the All-Star break while it conducts an investigation. Two horrendous sliders in the month of June are the root of this latest probe, which stems from unusual gambling activity in the states of Ohio, New York and New Jersey.
He is accused of throwing bad pitches on purpose. The suspicious bets were placed on the first pitch of a specific inning to be a ball. Both of the flagged pitches were not even close to the plate.
A new video has emerged from Luis Ortiz’s start against the Yankees on June 4. It was actually one of his best outings of the year with no runs allowed on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
However, he was audibly frustrated with one of his strikeouts against Anthony Volpe to begin the top of the fifth inning. Ortiz yelled “F—!” after Volpe swung and missed on a meatball hanger right in the zone.
Just realized he screamed “fuck” after striking him out ?????

I don’t know why a pitcher would be upset with a strikeout on his 103rd pitch of the game. Perhaps Luis Ortiz yelled that word in celebration. I have no idea. It could be nothing.
With that being said, I find it very hard to see the frustration as anything other than frustration. It seems to me like Ortiz was disappointed with the strikeout. His disappointment does not reflect well on the gambling probe. He is innocent until proven guilty but the evidence seems to allude toward guilt.
