The way things have been going in 2022, Reid Detmers’ no-hitter versus the Tampa Bay Rays on May 10th might be the last time we see a no-hitter thrown by just one pitcher in a game.
At least, that’s how many baseball “purists” feel after Yankees right-hander Luis Severino allow no hits through seven innings before being pulled from the game Monday night.
In Monday’s game versus the Texas Rangers, Severino faced the minimum 21 batters through seven innings after walking Josh Smith in the third inning then inducing Bubba Thompson into grounding into a double play.
When he was pulled from the game, the 28-year-old Severino had thrown 94 pitches and struck out seven.
It was his third start after missing two months with a right lat strain.
Josh Jung ended up breaking up the no-hitter in the eighth inning when he singled off reliever Miguel Castro.

“His stuff was all there,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “I think that’s one of the things that with the injuries he’s had over the last couple of years, one of the beauties of that is it’s made him really develop that change-up to become a really good pitch for him and it’s a pitch he has a lot of confidence in … It’s been really exciting to see what he’s been off the IL with three excellent starts.”
Severino, for his part, did not want to come out of the game.

When asked if he would have finished the no-hitter if given the chance, he replied, “One-thousand percent.”

Other than Detmers, the only other no-hitters thrown in 2022 were by the Astros on June 25th when three pitchers combined for the feat and on April 29th when the Mets used an astounding FIVE pitchers to complete their no-no.
In addition to Severino this season, Max Scherzer was pulled from a perfect game after six innings and just 68 pitches, while Justin Verlander was pulled from a perfect game after just 91 pitches.

Last year, Blake Snell was pulled from a no-hitter one year ago after 7 innings and 107 pitches.
