It’s been 15 years since Matt Ryan gave Boston College football fans some hope for the first (and, as of this writing, last) time since the Doug Flutie Era, and his standout 2007 season ultimately resulted in him being scooped up by the Falcons with the third pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Ryan initially lived up to the hype after taking his talents to Atlanta, where he secured Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, was named to the Pro Bowl four times, and picked up an MVP award in 2016—a campaign that ended with him watching his team blow a 28-3 lead to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

The performances that led to the man known as “Matty Ice” racking up those accolades resulted in the Falcons signing him to a five-year contract worth a potential $150 million in 2018. However, that turned out to be a very regrettable deal, as it coincided with the start of a slow and steady decline that ultimately led to his time in Atlanta coming to an end earlier this year when he was traded to the Colts in exchange for a third-round pick.

There was some speculation Ryan might be able to rebound after relocating. However, to say that hasn’t been the case would be the ultimate understatement—and there are multiple stats that highlight just how rough things have been for the quarterback in Indianapolis so far.

Matt Ryan currently leads the league in fumbles, interceptions, and sacks—and his dismal season could get even worse

Ryan and the Colts were able to secure their second win of the year during the Conference USA game masquerading as an NFL contest that millions of fans were forced to endure when they beat the Colts in overtime by a score of 12-9 on Thursday Night Football.

However, the fact that Indy walked away with the victory wasn’t necessarily reflective of the performance of their QB, who was presumably incredibly grateful Russell Wilson somehow managed to play worse than Ryan did in a game where the latter threw two interceptions, was sacked six times, and racked up yet another fumble (which he was able to recover) after coming into the game with 10 on the season.

Now, there is a slim chance the Colts are able to work out some of the kinks that have plagued them over the course of the first five weeks. However, there are also a number of indications Ryan is on track to have a historically awful year.

As Jim Ayello of The Athletic notes, Ryan currently leads the league in three categories you do not want to see your starting QB at the top of.

However, you can’t place the blame entirely on Ryan, as his offensive line also hasn’t given him a ton of help—as evidenced by this eye-opening stat shared by Joel Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.

Ryan will have some work to do if he wants to set one NFL record he’d probably prefer to avoid surpassing; Derek Carr was sacked 76 times in 2002, while Ryan is currently on pace for 71.

However, it seems like he’s a shoo-in to shatter the single-season record for most fumbles set by Kerry Collins and Daunte Culpepper (who respectively recorded 23 in 2001 and 2002), as he’ll have 37 to his name when everything wraps up if the current trend continues.

Not great!
