Max Homa headed to The Masters hoping to turn things around after a string of disappointing finishes. Unfortunately, he didn’t exactly set himself up for success during his round on Thursday, which included a shot that managed to hit a marshal standing in the middle of the fairway.
Anyone who’s willingly subjected themself to the game of golf knows it can be an incredibly frustrating venture due to the nature of a sport where the tiniest mistakes can have a massive impact on your score, and guys who make a living on the links aren’t immune to the ups and downs you have to deal with if you play it for long enough.
That includes Max Homa, the fan favorite who had his best year ever on the PGA Tour during the season that kicked off in 2022 but has struggled to recapture the magic over the past couple of years.
The 2025 campaign has been a particularly brutal one for the 34-year-old who headed into The Masters riding a dubious streak that’s seen him miss the cut in the last five events he’s played, and while there was always a chance he’d be able to bounce back at Augusta National, it didn’t seem like the odds were in his favor.
Homa got off to a solid start by getting to -2 after his first two holes on Thursday, but he canceled out the four birdies he recorded during his opening round with the same number of bogeys along with a 7 on the par-5 13th that led to him heading into Friday at +2 and in a tie for 51st.
He also fell victim to a slight setback on the 8th hole after missing the fairway with his drive prior to punching back out with a shot that (thankfully) bounced off the turf before striking the marshal who was tasked with holding the flag that’s used to let players know there’s a group ahead of him.

It sounded like Homa was the person who belted out a hearty”Come on, dude!” after realizing he lost some extra yardage courtesy of the marshal who attempted to play off what transpired in an absolutely hilarious manner, although both he and his caddie deserve the bulk of the blame for not realizing that outcome was in the cards in the first place.
Homa may not have been pleased with that development, but he was able to salvage the hole and finish with a par after finding the green with his third shot.
