Miami Hurricanes’ Cam Ward is currently being viewed as the top quarterback in the NFL draft by GMs around the league. At the end of the college football season, many believed that Shedeur Sanders would be the top quarterback taken in the draft, but that has quickly changed.
Earlier this week, it was reported that a top NFL quarterback scout viewed Sanders as “brash” and “arrogant” during his interview. A new report by The Athletic’s Dane Brugler claims “a lot of teams” don’t view Sanders as a first-round quarterback.
While Sanders’ draft stock continues to fall, Ward’s is beginning to rise.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan, Ward is currently considered the top QB in the draft due to the fact that teams aren’t sold on Sanders’ skills.

Speaking with evaluators throughout the league and sources with knowledge of the quarterback market, there seemed to be an overwhelming consensus that Ward is the top option in an overall weak QB draft. Most didn’t think Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders is in the same prospect tier as Ward. The thinking is that Sanders doesn’t have an elite trait or skill.
Ranaan suggests the Giants could trade up for Ward and take him #1 overall in the upcoming draft.

“Multiple league sources left their meetings with the Giants this week thinking a trade for the No. 1 pick with the Tennessee Titans was likely. In that scenario, they expected it to be for Miami’s Cam Ward.”
There’s still over a month until the NFL draft and a lot could change, but it’s becoming clear that Sanders will not be the first quarterback to be taken off the board.
