As someone who spent years living in a state without legal sports betting while being mocked by stories about people who were able to turn a tiny sum into a veritable fortune by hitting a longshot futures bet or cashing in on a laughably improbable parlay, I can’t even describe how nice it was to finally have the chance to get in on the action.

Am I the sports betting savant I convinced myself I was? Should I keep throwing money on tennis matches between two players I’ve never heard of held in countries I couldn’t place on a map? Have I actually made any money? The answer to all of those questions might be a hard “no,” but mobile sports betting has still added an entertaining level of intrigue to athletic events and I’m glad to have it in my life.

As a result, I’m amped for the good people of Louisiana who will soon be able to embrace it with open arms after a similarly lengthy wait. Following weeks of rumors and speculation, Louisiana Gambling Control Board chair Ronnie Johns announced online sportsbooks will have the green light to go live at 8 A.M. on Friday, January 28th to officially usher in a new era in the state.

As of this writing, only BetMGM has confirmed it will go live when the embargo lifts, but it’s likely others will follow suit as we get closer to the big day.
