The college football season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In fact, things haven’t gone the Huskers’ way in a long, long time. Nebraska has not made a bowl game since 2016. In that time, the Huskers have had three different head coaches and will almost assuredly have a fourth next year.

They haven’t just been bad, they’ve been awful. Nebraska has won more than four games only once since their last bowl appearance. The program’s collective record is 22-43 over the last six seasons.

But things somehow got even worse in 2022. The university brought in alum Scott Frost in 2018 and he was thought to be the program savior. Instead, Frost amassed a 16-31 record in just under 4.5 seasons at the helm of the Huskers. The university then paid him an extra $7.5 million earlier this year just to cut him loose a month early.

Things haven’t been much better since interim coach Mickey Joseph took over. Joseph is just 2-4 in six games this year and Nebraska had a tall task ahead of it on Saturday against third-ranked Michigan.

The Huskers actually hang in with the high-powered Wolverines for much of the first half. They entered the break trailing 17-3. But sophomore wide receiver Alante Brown had a half to forget.

Because not only did Michigan beat up the Huskers on the scoreboard, but it also added injury to insult.

Mid-way through the second quarter with Nebraska trailing 14-0, Brown caught a pass from quarterback Chubba Purdy. He then turned upfield and attempted to leap over Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil. What happened next was the stuff of nightmares.

Brown didn’t clear Sainristil on the hurdle and caught a helmet directly in a spot where no helmet should ever go. Every man in America immediately shuttered at the hit.

Thankfully Brown is much tougher than most.

Remember kids, if you’re going to try to hurdle someone, make sure you’ve got the hops to clear them.
