This season was not a great one for rookie quarterbacks. Trevor Lawrence had a 2 month stretch where he threw 1 touchdown pass. Trey Lance barely played this year and struggled when he did. Justin Fields was sacked repeatedly as the Bears waited to fire Matt Nagy. Zach Wilson was bad enough that the “Mike White era” become a thing.

Yesterday, it was Zach Wilson who was a topic of conversation on “The Michael Kay Show”. Joe Namath was asked about Wilson and had some interesting comments. He started out with some positive comments or Wilson.

He laid the blame for his difficult rookie season on the Jets organization not giving him the help around him required for a rookie to succeed. Then the conversation took an odd turn.

Namath expressed concerns over Zach Wilson’s size, stating that “you’d like for a guy to be 6-6, 6,7 back there in the pocket.”

It’s a surprising observation for Namath to have about Zach Wilson. Wilson is 6’2″ and 214 pounds. Namath was 6’2″ and 200 pounds during his time with the New York Jets.

Namath’s size never seemed to hold him back. He won 2 AFL MVP awards and a Super Bowl MVP while also leading the Jets to the franchise’s only Super Bowl win. This was all en route to enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

Zach Wilson certainly has some issues that led him to throw 9 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season, but size likely isn’t one of those issues.

Maybe he’ll have a growth spurt this offseason that will make the New York Jets feel better about their decision to draft him.
