Ohio State offensive lineman Carson Hinzman was a little bit too candid during a podcast appearance prior to the Cotton Bowl. It has since been deleted from YouTube and Amazon as a result.

However, the ‘B&B Podcast’ episode lives on Listen Notes. There are a lot of interesting tidbits, including a discussion of how the Buckeyes use Name, Image and Likeness during the recruiting process.

Hinzman also talked about his diet. He absolutely hates how much he is forced to eat in a day.

According to the 6-foot-4, 300-pound center, Ohio State mandates daily weigh-ins for players. They are conducted by Mickey Marotti, who serves as the head strength coach, which is formally known as the ‘Director of Football Sport Performance.’

Each player on the team has a specific requirement for caloric intake to reach the set goal. Hinzman said that he has to eat around 6,000 calories per day just to maintain his current weight.

Fear is a large part of his eating habits. Hinzman said that he was close to 20 pound underweight ahead of the Notre Dame game and did everything that he could to try and avoid Marotti’s wrath.

I had to chug so many Gatorades just to try and get back up […]

I was so afraid of what he was going to say if I hopped on the scale at that weight.

A detailed breakdown of Hinzman’s daily eating schedule, while not uncommon for an athlete of his size, is pretty insane. Especially considering that he is still a college football player and not technically a professional.

  • 8:00am — Before practice
    • Three pieces of toast with banana
  • 8:30am
    • Two cups of scrambled eggs
    • Four slices of bacon
    • Three pieces of toast
    • One cup of fruit
  • 1:00pm — Post practice
    • Protein shake
  • 1:30pm
    • Two pieces of chicken
    • Two cups of mac & cheese
    • One cup of mashed potatoes
    • One cup of coleslaw
  • 3:30pm
    • Buffalo Wild Wings:
      • Wings and fries
  • 6:30pm
    • Chick-Fil-A:
      • Two orders of grilled nuggets
      • Mac & cheese
  • 8:00pm —
    • “snack”

That is what Hinzman called a “low day” at about 5,100 calories. He often has to eat three dinners.

When asked whether he enjoys his eating habits, Hinzman said that he does not.

No. I hate eating so much. It’s awful.

I never thought I’d say “I hate having to eat food” […] but yeah, it’s tough.

For a 300-pound offensive lineman to eat that many meals in a day is not that unheard of. Even on the college level. However, that doesn’t make Hinzman’s daily eating schedule any less crazy, especially since the fear of his strength coach drives him to keep chowing!
