Depending on who you believe, Deion Sanders taking over as head of the Colorado Buffaloes football program will either be the greatest thing to ever happen to the program, or the worst.

Sanders’ roster building tactics in his first year at the University of Colorado have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, including several players, their parents and numerous college coaches.

Among those college coaches is one anonymous Pac-12 head coach who believes the 2023 football season is going to be a “lose-lose” situation for the Buffaloes.

“It feels like a lose-lose for Colorado with Prime. Either he’s gonna be really good really fast and leave for another gig, which, looking at that roster doesn’t seem possible,” on3.com reports the coach told Athlon Sports. “The alternative is that they’re gonna be bad, and they’ll end up firing him in a big circus.”

“Jackson State was so good because they could get FBS-level guys and beat on FCS rosters. That won’t happen here. They’re not a good roster right now. How does he handle losing big? We haven’t seen that.”

The way Deion Sanders has created his roster in Colorado is unprecedented, having turned over more than 75 percent of the roster from 2022.

Some folks, like that anonymous Pac-12 coach, believe that tactic is a disaster in the making.

Deion Sanders, of course, thinks those critics will be eating their words.

“They [his critics] just want to take a shot at me, and I’m good with that … this is their opportunity to take a shot. But they better shoot now, because in a moment you’re not going to be able to shoot,” Sanders told Joel Klatt earlier this month.

Nebraska fans, who heard a similar message from Scott Frost before he went 16–31 (a .340 winning percentage), had a lot of fun with that comment.

One thing is for sure. Fans won’t have to wait very long to find out if Sanders’ unique approach works.

The Buffs take on national runner-up TCU in Forth Worth on Sept. 2, then face the aforementioned Nebraska Cornhuskers Sept. 9. Colorado then takes on Colorado State before back to back weeks against Oregon and USC.
