Ex-Oregon State Coach’s Team Issued Apparel Turns Up At Goodwill Just Days After He Left

It appears the Oregon State Beavers aren’t taking long to move on from ex-head coach Jonathan Smith.

Or perhaps Smith is not taking long to move on from his alma mater. Perhaps both.

Both a humorous situation arose on Tuesday when a someone in a Snapchat group named “Oregon State 2026” discovered Smith’s team-issued apparel tucked away on a rack at a Goodwill in a Corvallis.

Smith, who played quarterback for the Beavs from 1998-2001 and was the Fiesta Bowl MVP as a senior, returned to his alma mater in 2018 to become the head coach.

He slowly but gradually helped to turn around an ailing program, leading Oregon State to a 10–3 in 2022, his fifth season at the helm. The Beavers backed that up with an 8-4 record this past season and Smith parlayed it into a bigger job.

The 44-year-old left Oregon State for the presumably greener (at least, in the sense that money is green) pastures of the Big Ten and Michigan State.

That decision didn’t sit well with Beavers players, who didn’t take long to turn on their former coach.

The move also led to the departure of freshman quarterback Aidan Chiles, who has since entered the transfer portal. Chiles came to Oregon State as the third-highest ranked recruit in program history.

So yeah, it’s safe to say that Smith won’t be welcomed home with open arms anytime soon. And both he and the university appear to be in the “spite” phase of their breakup.

But look at it this way.

Somebody just got a really good deal on some expensive team-issued apparel. And it’s a collector’s item that they can hold onto the rest of their life.

So at least somebody is coming out as a winner in this scenario. Even if it’s neither of the two main characters,
