Patrick Mahomes, despite being in the GOAT conversation as a NFL quarterback, spent much of his his youth hanging around baseball fields.

And these weren’t just any old baseball fields. His dad Pat Mahomes played Major League Baseball from 1992 to 2003.

In high school, Patrick Mahomes was named the Maxpreps Male Athlete of the Year for 2013–2014 after passing for 50 touchdowns, rushing for 15 more and throwing a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a game his senior year.

For awhile there was speculation and concern in Lubbock (home of Texas Tech University) that Mahomes would try his hand at pro baseball.

Luckily for the Red Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs, he committed to playing football in college (though he was still drafted in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers).

That doesn’t mean he still doesn’t have a special place in his heart for baseball.

“One thousand percent, baseball was my first love,” Patrick Mahomes told Time this week.

Even after committing to Texas Tech to play football, Mahomes still had Major League Baseball dreams.

“My goal was to go to college, play three years of football, three years of baseball, and go into the MLB draft,” he said.

These days, Mahomes has had to settle for just being a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals when it comes to baseball, but he still wants to get back on the baseball field, even for just a little bit.

“I’ve talked to the Royals,” Mahomes said. “And if I can maybe go out to a spring training, I’m not opposed to that. I’ll get it approved by the Chiefs and everything like that. But maybe one of these years I go out there and see what I got. See if I can still hit the ball or pitch or whatever that is. Maybe not in the games but I can at least practice with them.”

Patrick Mahomes’ coach with the Chiefs, Andy Reid, would not exactly be in favor of that happening.

“I haven’t even thought about that. You’re hitting me with a pretty big one right there,” Reid told Time when asked about it.

“He was a heck of a baseball player,” Reid then admitted.
