Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has made his first public statement about the tragic shooting that occurred at the team’s Super Bowl parade on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that the shooting began near Union Station in downtown Kansas City around 2:30 p.m. local time.

Less than an hour after the shooting — which has, so far, taken the life of one person and injured up to 9 more — Mahomes took to Twitter to say that he’s “praying for Kansas City.”

The Chiefs and their fans were celebrating their third Super Bowl title in four years when shots rang out near Union Station in Kansas City. The most recent reports indicate 10 people have been shot, with 3 being left in critical condition and 1 being dead.

Kansas City officials previously expected about 1 million people to be in attendance at the parade. The two suspected shooters, who have been taken into custody, have yet to be identified.

“We need people to exit the area as quickly and safely as possible and avoid the parking garage in order to facilitate treatment of shooting victims,” police said in a statement following the shooting.

“Many of you have footage of many officers securing Union Station, they are working to provide for the safety of everyone inside Union Station and expedite care of those injured.”

According to NBC News, “officials believe the shooting is criminal in nature but is not initially believed to be terrorism.”

Currently, the National Football League has yet to release an official statement addressing the tragic incident.
