Penguins Shove Capitals Troll Job Back In Their Face After Washington Gets Swept By Rangers

On Sunday, the Capitals became the first team to be eliminated from the 2024 Stanely Cup Playoffs courtesy of the Rangers, and the Penguins were more than happy to give Washington a taste of its own medicine after New York completed the sweep.

There were plenty of people who argued the Washington Capitals didn’t have what it took to compete in the playoffs after they managed to secure the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with a win over the Flyers in their final game of the regular season.

Based on what transpired when the Capitals faced off against the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs, those people were correct in their assessment of a team that failed to secure a single victory over the course of a lopsided four games where Alexander Ovechkin had just five shots on goal and didn’t record a single point.

Now, it’s hard to imagine the Pittsburgh Penguins would’ve fared much better against this year’s Presidents’ Trophy winners. However, there’s no way to know what would have happened thanks in part to the Capitals, who ensured the boys in black and yellow wouldn’t be making it to the postseason with their aforementioned win against Philadelphia.

It’s worth noting the Penguins needed the Capitals and the Red Wings to lose in order to be in a position to secure a playoff spot with a win in their final game (which they lost after it had already become an essentially meaningless contest), However, that didn’t stop Washington from taking credit (with an assist from Nathan Fielder) after Pittsburgh’s fate was officially sealed.

You could argue the Penguins forfeited the right to fire any shots after failing to make the cut, but I can’t say I blame them for revisiting the tweet in question to comment  “Well, this didn’t age very well, did it?” after the Capitals ultimately walked away from the playoffs with nothing to show thanks to the Rangers.

I can’t help but respect that kind of pettiness.
