Merrill Kelly effectively peeved Phillies fans on Tuesday with his pregame comments about the atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park. Those remarks quickly backfired as he was taken yard three different times during a 10-0 Philadelphia win.

The rough night got started even before he took the mound in Game 2 of the NLCS as those in attendance viciously heckled the starting pitcher in the bullpen.

Obscenities were thrown Kelly’s way early and often after he claimed the venue couldn’t get any louder than what he heard at the World Baseball Classic.

“I haven’t obviously heard this place on the field, but I’d be very surprised if it trumped that Venezuela game down in Miami,” Kelly said earlier this week.

In that particular matchup, the US took down Venezuela in an exciting 9-7 victory. Trailing 5-7 in the eighth inning, shortstop Trea Turner put his team back on top with a late grand slam.

LoanDepot Park would get loud in that instance, but Citizens Bank Park certainly rivaled that noise level this week. On Monday, in fact, the stadium was recorded at 111 decibels following Bryce Harper’s home run in the first inning.

It would get loud again quickly on Tuesday, and oddly enough, it would be another Trea Turner sparking the eruption.

Turner put the Phillies on the board first with a home run off of Merrill Kelly in his first at-bat. Kyle Schwarber would follow suit with a homer in the third and another in the sixth to extend the Philadelphia lead.

Kelly was removed after that third and final bomb, leaving him to listen to the crowd from the dugout in what wound up being a 10-0 blowout.

Scenes at Citizens Bank Park were absolutely electric.

The Phillies flexed that homefield advantage in the first two games of the NLCS series, landing a pair of decisive wins and smashing six home runs.

They’ll head to Arizona for the next two games in hopes of a series sweep. Beware, though. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was heard talking up his own homefield advantage in a presser this week.

“The final game at Chase Field against the Dodgers, when it was rocking with 50K strong, I was proud of our fans,” Lovullo said. “It was about the same [as Citizens Bank Park].”

Those fans will be sure to come out loud and proud to root the home team on to victory.
