Ohio State Coach Ryan Day Says Beating Notre Dame Was A Romantic Gesture Toward His Wife

College football coaches don’t have a lot of time during the season, to say the least. No one may be busier than college football coaches during the fall. For Ryan Day, beating Notre Dame on the road was the most romantic thing he’s done for his wife in quite some time.

And, most Buckeye fans would agree, as their dramatic, 17-14, win over Notre Dame felt like the program’s biggest win since the 2020 College Football Playoff Semifinal demolition of Clemson.

It almost was a devastating loss. Notre Dame and quarterback Sam Hartman went on a legendary 11-play 96-yard drive to start the fourth quarter to take a 14-10 lead. And, after they stopped Ohio State on downs deep in Irish territory with just over four minutes remaining, things looked good for the Irish.

But, the Buckeye defense forced a three-and-out and Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord led a drive for the ages for Ohio State. The first-year starter led the team on a 15-play 65-yard drive that featured a 4th and 7 conversion and a 3rd and 19 completion. The latter set up the winning touchdown run with one second left by Chip Traynum.

The win catapulted Ohio State to #4 in the AP Poll, and sets them up nicely to make the College Football Playoff with big games against Penn State and Michigan left.

How much did that win mean to Ryan Day? Well, he certainly needed it. The coach had faced criticism in the offseason after a second-straight embarrassing loss to Michigan and a close playoff loss to Georgia that saw the Buckeyes blow a fourth-quarter lead.

It clearly meant something to his wife, Christina, too. Ryan Day claims that’s the most romantic thing he’s done for her in quite a while.

Football guy. I love it.

Ohio State is off this weekend, so maybe Ryan Day can take his wife out for a nice dinner, maybe a movie. It’s also pumpkin patch season and apple-picking season, Coach Day.
