The Savannah Bananas are one of the most controversial topics in sports. People love to hate them for ruining the sanctity of baseball while chasing clout on social media.
I don’t get it!
First and foremost, you do not have to watch the Savannah Bananas if you do not want to watch the Savannah Bananas. They are often on television during the summer because they draw a large population of younger viewers. You do not have to be one of them. Change the channel. Stick to MLB.
Perhaps more importantly, the kids absolutely love it so who cares if you don’t!
For those who are somehow not familiar with the Savannah Bananas, they are affectionately known as the Globetrotters of baseball. However, that label severely undersells their elaborate productions. Games are played on a two-hour time limit scored by points instead of runs. The rules are as follow:
In addition to the actual baseball itself, the Savannah Bananas perform various routines and stunts throughout the game. One of their pitchers takes to the mound while wearing stilts. Bats are often lit on fire before a hitter steps into the box. Dance breaks are frequent.
Major League Baseball is constantly searching for new ways to make its product more entertaining as popularity continues to decline. The Savannah Bananas do exactly that. More than 70,000 fans packed into an NFL stadium to watch them play one single game in Nashville. They are a big deal!
And yet, people still love to tear them down. The haters can’t stand them because they dilute the game.
I am a firm believer that there is room for both sides of baseball to coexist but nobody cares what I think. The Savannah Bananas are only worried about fun. They want baseball to be fun. They want people — especially kids — to have fun at their games.
That leads us to an incredible moment between two young fans and Bananas infielder Dalton Mauldin. Mauldin was warming up his vocals for a concert prior to the game outside of the stadium when he was asked about Forrest Frank’s viral worship hit ‘Your Way’s Better.’
Mauldin was not familiar with the song prior to the request but the two boys were really hoping to hear him play it so he learned the chorus as quickly as possible. It led to a really heartwarming moment.
If you are able to watch that video and still hate the Savannah Bananas, you have a cold heart. The joy Mauldin brought to those two young fans is something they will not soon forget. That’s pretty cool if you ask me!
