Seth Towns is officially cleared to play his eighth season of college basketball. That may not be all!

Towns, a three-start prospect in the recruiting Class of 2016, came out of high school in the same year as Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum, Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, Bam Adebayo, Miles Bridges and Lauri Markkanen, who are all deep into their NBA careers. Tatum is in his sixth year with the Celtics. Ball is on his third pro team in six seasons. The others listed are all on their second contracts, at least.

Meanwhile, Towns will soon return to the court for his eighth year on the collegiate level. He was officially cleared by the NCAA on Tuesday morning.

Seth Towns will play for Howard University.

It is his third school!

  • Harvard: 2016-2020
  • Ohio State: 2020-2022
  • OFF: 2022-2023
  • Howard: 2023-??

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward committed to Harvard out of high school in 2016 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2020. However, after being named the Ivy League Player of the Year as a sophomore, a knee injury saw him miss his true junior and senior years.

At that point, Towns hit the transfer portal and landed at Ohio State. He averaged 10.8 minutes per game as a fifth-year junior with the Buckeyes. Back surgery saw him miss the entire 2021/22 season.

Towns graduated Ohio State University with a Master of Science in May of 2022. Although he had been in college for six years and earned two degrees, he had played just three seasons.

On Sept. 4, 2022, Towns announced that he was stepping away from basketball and took off all of last season. However, because of his injury struggles and the blanket waiver granted to all athletes during the 2020 pandemic, he had two years of eligibility remaining.

Towns ultimately announced his comeback back in May and transferred to Howard. The NCAA did not approve his eligibility waiver before the Bison’s first three games of the season.

It was unclear as to if or when he would be allowed to play until the waiver was approved on Tuesday.

Now, with 27 games left in the season, Towns is set to begin his seventh season (fourth on the court) in eight years with a home game against Boston on Tuesday night or road game against Rutgers on Saturday. Meanwhile, Tatum will play his 450th game in the NBA.

If Towns wants to play again next year, he technically has another year of eligibility remaining. It, too, would need to be approved.
