Spencer Rattler’s college career has been anything but ordinary thus far. After redshirting in his first year at Oklahoma, the former five-star quarterback burst onto the scene in his second season. He was then benched in year three and transferred.

After Rattler entered the transfer portal, there was a lot of speculation about where he could end up. UCLA, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Oregon were among the teams that were thrown out.

In addition, Rattler is from Arizona.

He went to Phoenix Pinnacle high school, which is just a 30-minute drive away from Tempe and two-hour drive from Tucson.

Thus, transferring back home and spending one year at a program like Arizona or Arizona State may have made a lot of sense. The Wildcats are really bad, so the Sun Devils would have been a better opportunity for success.

Well, according to a recent report from ASU beat reporter Chris Karpman, the Sun Devils had a real chance to bring Rattler to Tempe. In the end, head coach Herm Edwards and his staff chose not to pursue him.

Karpman said that Arizona State had a “very good chance” to land a commitment from Rattler after he entered the portal. However, after Edwards met with incumbent quarterback Jayden Daniels and his mother, a decision was made not to pursue Rattler.

According to Rattler’s uncle, the disinterest was mutual after it was assumed that Daniels was not entering the NFL Draft and staying in Tempe.

Rattler definitely had some interest in Arizona State but has since transferred to South Carolina. To make matters worse, Daniels is entering the transfer portal so Edwards and the Sun Devils do not have a quarterback for 2022. Tough scenes in Tempe.
