Pittsburgh Steelers supporters have grown frustrated with the lack of production on the offensive side of the football. Much of the criticism has been placed on play caller Matt Canada, who took over at offensive coordinator in 2021.

The Steelers have scored 20 points or less in 25 of the 39 games with Canada in the booth, and are currently averaging just 15.8 points per contest, good for the fourth worst mark in the NFL.

Tensions came to a head this past weekend as the home crowd let out a roar of “Fire Matt Canada” chants during a win over the Ravens. Sunday represented the fourth time in five games that the offense has failed to surpass 300 yards or 17 points.

Pittsburgh fans might be happy to hear that an experienced coach has reached out to about joining the offensive staff. They likely won’t be too excited with the front office’s response.

According to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, former NFL quarterback and play caller Byron Leftwich has reached out to the Steelers.

Kaboly says that the Steelers have ignored Leftwich’s calls.

As offensive coordinator with the Bucs, he led two top five units with Tom Brady at the helm. He also had a top 15 unit in 2019. His one season with the Cardinals was lackluster as Arizona finished dead last in offensive production while his final season in Tampa landed a No. 25 ranking.

It seems the Steelers are content with the offensive staff as currently assembled. Pittsburgh is winning in spite of its offensive production at the moment, sitting in first place in the AFC North.

That likely isn’t a recipe for a Super Bowl title.
