For the first time since 1975, it appears that Bill Belichick will be without a coaching job in the NFL, with the all but three of the past thirty-two years as a head coach.

Belichick and the New England Patriots decided to part ways after a disastrous 2023 season that saw the team go 4-13 and clearly showed that the head coach/general manager was not leading the team in the right direction.

Most expected the six-time Super Bowl champion to be a top candidate for the numerous head coaching vacancies this offseason. But, job openings came and went, with none of them getting a deal done with Bill Belichick.

That’s pretty shocking if you think about it. After all, he’s arguably the greatest coach of all time, still wants to coach, and he wasn’t given a chance to be a head coach this year. Maybe the game has passed him by. But, maybe it hasn’t! Maybe he needed a fresh start in a place where he wouldn’t have as much control over the roster and had a better quarterback situation.

With Bill Belichick no longer being a head coach, his son Steve had to get out from under his father’s shadow, as he was serving as the Patriots’ outside linebackers coach the last four seasons. He’d been on staff in New England since 2012.

Unlike Dad, Steve did get a coaching job for the upcoming season. He will serve as the defensive coordinator for the University of Washington and new head coach Jedd Fisch this upcoming year.

Recently, Steve Belichick, 37, had a chance to get in a nice jab against his dad, claiming that the difference between the two lies in their employment status.

Nice one, Steve. But, you’ve got to prove your coaching chops this year out from under your dad’s watchful eye.
