The Raiders attempted to trade up for quarterback C.J. Stroud before the 2023 NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, while in an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show.

C.J. Stroud is now thriving with the Houston Texans but he could’ve been starting for the Raiders this week.

This update tracks with previous reports from months ago, which said that the Raiders had explored trading up to the 1st overall pick when it was held by the Bears, according to Jeff Howe of the Athletic. However, they got outbid by the Panthers.

The Bears, requested a significant trade package, asking the Raiders for a 2023 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick, two future first-round picks, and a future second-round pick. Eventually, Chicago traded the top selection to the Panthers in exchange for wide receiver DJ Moore, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick.

The Panthers used that 1st overall pick to select Bryce Young, who has been up-and-down so far during his rookie year, mostly with more down than up. In contrast, the Texans, holding the 2nd overall pick, opted for C.J. Stroud, who has emerged as easily the best rookie quarterback so far this season.
