Thomas Heffner will not be allowed to play the 2026 high school football season at the Lausanne Collegiate School in Tennessee. He was officially denied eligibility on Tuesday with less than one week until the first game.

The reason is not clear.

This unfortunate ruling creates a major shakeup to the landscape of high school football. One of the top quarterbacks in the state is completely stuck without a guaranteed place to play his junior season.

Who is Thomas Heffner?

At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Thomas Heffner ranks as one of the top 1,000 prospects in the college football recruiting Class of 2028. He is considered the No. 57 player at his position with a three-star rating. He currently holds nine scholarship offers from schools like Memphis, FIU, Arizona State, Liberty and Tulane.

Heffner had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2025. His impressive year at Melrose High School led him to be named as the Region 8, Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year, to the TNFCA 3A All-State Team, and a finalist for the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football award.

The son of former South Carolina and Tennessee State quarterback Antonio Heffner completed 70% of his passes for 2,049 yards and 32 passing touchdowns with 469 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. His highlight tape is legit.

The Wildcats finished at 10-2 last season. And then their starting quarterback decided to transfer. Heffner left Melrose.

The governing body of Tennessee high school football ruled the starting quarterback at Lausanne Collegiate ineligible.

Thomas Heffner decided to transfer from Melrose High School to Lausanne Collegiate for his junior season in 2026. Lausanne is a private college-placement school in Memphis with a total enrollment of 890 students in grades PreK2—12. Foreign nationals comprise one third of the student body, representing 68 different countries. It is one of the top academic schools in the south.

It was Heffner’s third transfer in as many years. He actually went to middle school at Lausanne, transferred to Olive Branch for his freshman year of high school, transferred to Melrose as a sophomore, and back to Lausanne as a junior.

The Lynx compete in Division II, Class 2A of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association in the West region. They had high hopes for this coming season with Heffner at quarterback on the heels of an 8-4 season in 2025. He was going to throw to Lawrence Britt, a four-star recruit who totaled nearly 1,000 all-purpose yards last season. It was going to be a dangerous duo.

That is no longer the case.

As first reported by John Varlas, the three-star quarterback was first ruled ineligible last week. His appeal was denied on Monday at the board of control meeting. Thomas Heffner cannot play for Lausanne in 2026. The season begins on Friday.

High school football players in Tennessee get one free transfer. They are immediately eligible after their first transfer. Heffner transferred from Olive Branch to Melrose. He was eligible right away.

If a player transfers for a second time, he must get a hardship waiver.

Lausanne officials cited Heffner’s strong academic record as the main reason for his desire to transfer. He is an honor roll student who wants to study mechanical engineering. Lausanne’s classes are more challenging than Melrose. The move will better set him up for success in the classroom.

Didn’t matter. The Lynx’s starting quarterback was officially ruled ineligible with less than five days until the start of the season.

To make matters worse, the new academic year started on Aug. 10.

Heffner is already taking classes at Lausanne. That leaves him with three options. He either sit out the entire season, transfer back to Melrose, or leave the state entirely. And he may not be eligible if he does leave Tennessee. Brutal.
