Tiger Woods Plans To Play All Four Majors, But Should He?

Through two rounds at The 2024 Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods looked as good as he had in years. At just +1 and just outside the top-20 through two rounds, some were dreaming of seeing the world’s favorite golfer on the front page of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.

But, after a solid start to his 3rd round on Saturday, everything unraveled for the 48-year-old.

Tiger shot a 81 on Saturday, playing the final 15 holes in 9-over-par. Things weren’t much better on Sunday, firing a +5 77 to finish in 60th place, dead last among all players who made the cut.

That being said, he did make his 24th consecutive cut at The Masters, an all-time record.

At this point in his career, it seems unlikely he can put four competitive rounds together. Too many injuries, especially those that stem from a high-speed one-car crash Woods was in back in February 2021, have significantly hampered his physical ability. While he’s still hitting the ball far and can pretty much still hit all of the shots, it seems walking four rounds seems to be a really tall task, let alone practicing enough to compete with guys like Scottie Scheffler.

If Tiger Woods wanted to, he could probably use a golf cart. They are banned on the PGA Tour, but Tiger’s former college teammate, Casey Martin, has a degenerative health condition involving his now-amputated right leg and sued and won the right to use a cart under the Americans With Disabiities Act in a United States Supreme Court Ruling. Tiger’s injuries would certainly meet the standard for a disability.

But, he doesn’t want to use a cart out of respect for the game. In my opinion, without a cart, he can’t compete to the level that he’s accustomed to competing.

He says he wants to play all four majors this year. The PGA Championship is at Valhalla Country Club, The US Open is at Pinehurst, and the Open Championship is at Royal Troon. He’s won at Valhalla, back in 2000 in a playoff over Bob May. He was a runner-up at Pinehurst in 2005, as well.

But, is this really the best idea for his health and game right now? That’s for Tiger Woods to decide. That being said, it’s surely hard for his millions of fans around the world to watch him struggle.
