Wes Welker Couldn’t Convince Tom Brady To Try His Strategy To Stay Warm In Chicago In 2010

The Patriots are no stranger to cold weather. However, when Tom Brady and New England rolled into Chicago in 2010, any experience in frigid temperatures was thrown out of the window.

It was less than 25 degrees on the field prior to kickoff in Week 14 of the regular season. And to make matters worse, if it wasn’t cold enough already, it was snowy and windy, with the “real feel” sitting in the single digits, if not colder.

In turn, the Patriots were looking for any opportunity to warm up. Especially Wes Welker.

The 11-year NFL veteran wide receiver was about as old school as they come. He would never be caught dead wearing sleeves.

Leading up to the game, in an effort to get a little bit of a liquid blanket, Welker decided to take a shot of whiskey. After shooting some Jack Daniels, he suggested that his quarterback do the same.

Brady declined.

He and tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was also on the team, recently told the story during a live Q&A for Autograph and it’s as funny as it sounds.

“I do remember Wes Welker taking a shot of, I think, Jack Daniels before the game too because he was trying to warm up,” Brady said. “He’s like, ‘TB, come on get a shot!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m not taking a shot before the game.’ Because Wes was so old school. He was like, ‘I’ve gotta take it!’ And he did. He went out there and was wearing no sleeves. He was so fired up for the game. It was hilarious.”

Gronk went on to back up the Welker story and thought that it was a pyscho move in the best way possible.

“He did. He did rip a shot. And it was Jack Daniels,” he said. “What a maniac. I love him.”

Welker ended up making eight catches for 115 yards in a 36-7 win in the cold weather of the Windy City. The shot of Jack did the trick!
